Loose facial hair is a top contamination vector in food production. Even one stray hair found by a customer or an auditor can cost more than a year's worth of beard cover supply. Canadian food safety regulations require beard coverings for any staff with facial hair longer than approximately 5mm (lightweight stubble). Audit-ready facilities issue beard covers as standard PPE alongside bouffant caps and gloves — no exceptions.
Some beard covers use double elastic loops (one over each ear). They're cheap to produce but uncomfortable for 8-hour shifts and tend to slip. Our 21" beard covers use a single elastic loop that goes around the head and rests under the chin, supported by the natural jawline. Result: better fit, less complaints from staff, fewer gaps where hair can escape. After auditing the price list, this was a key correction we made — we don't carry the cheaper double-loop style because it's not worth the cost savings.
The 21" length is sized to comfortably cover anything from light stubble to a full long beard. For staff with very long beards, the elastic stretch and material gives plenty of room. The non-woven polypropylene is breathable enough that staff don't overheat during physical work.
For HACCP audits, beard covers must be worn together with bouffant caps — covering both head and face hair. Both products are typically issued together in the morning shift kit. We recommend stocking beard covers at roughly 30-40% of bouffant cap volume since not all staff need them.
